Sunless Tanning FAQ’s

Make sure you shave, shower, and exfoliate your skin thoroughly prior to the session. This will prepare your skin so that the spray tan goes on evenly. Do not wear any heavy lotions, perfumes, or makeup the day of your session and avoid certain extra moisturizing soaps like, Dove, Oil of Olay, etc. This may act as a barrier to the spray and stop the tanning process.

Essentially this is a decision of the client. Most clients wear a bathing suit or undergarments. Even though the solution will be sprayed on clothes, it does not stain. Some clients, in effort to avoid lines, prefer to wear nothing. In addition to what you should wear while being spray tanned, take caution in the clothes you wear to the salon. Wearing loose fitting clothes is preferable for even drying. Depending on the weather, flip flops or sandals are a good idea as well to avoid sock lines.

The principle-tanning agent used in all self-tanning formulas is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This ingredient does not produce a “real tan” by increasing the skin’s melanin levels, rather it creates a tanned appearance by developing a brown color on the surface of the skin. The actions of DHA is limited to the upper layer of the skin and involves a reaction between DHA and skin proteins that produces brown compounds.

DHA is a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound approved by the FDA for use in externally applied sunless tanning solutions. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation or ingestion. DHA is often derived from a vegetable source like beets or sugar cane

The development of color takes anywhere from 2 to 6 hours and the intensity of color is dependent upon DHA concentration in the product as well as each tanner’s individual skin characteristics. The color developed by the DHA usually lasts 5 to 7 days and begins to fade as the top layer of the skin naturally exfoliates.

The FDA has approved DHA for external application to your skin. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation or ingestion. To make sure you are completely protected, the FDA suggests wearing protective eyewear, nose filters, lip balm, and protective undergarments.

Absolutely. In fact, the sunless tanning results are phenomenal over a nice base tan. If you want to combine both applications in a single visit, we recommend using the tanning bed first, then the sunless unit. You can use a tanning lotion in the bed like you always do but preferably use the lotion specifically for “cocktail” tanning. However, make sure it is rubbed into the skin really well and use a towel to wipe away any excess lotion or perspiration after getting out the tanning bed. Without these precautions, or by using the tanning bed after the sunless spray application, you run the risk of tanning unevenly.

Barrier cream provides a protective barrier layer to prevent the penetration of DHA into the upper layers of the skin thus preventing staining. Certain areas of the body, like the palms of the hands, bottom of the feet, cuticles, and nails are more porous and stain easily. Therefore, these areas should be covered with an even layer or barrier cream to prevent unwanted discoloration.

Immediately following your session, the DHA is still working with your body to produce a deep dark, even tan. We recommend not showering for at least 6-8 hours, to properly ensure a deep dark tan.

Apply moisturizer in the morning and evening after showering. Avoid long, hot showers and baths, and scrubbing the skin excessively. Pat your skin dry after showering. Exercising, chlorine in swimming pools, and hot tubs can shorten the longevity of your tan or fade it unevenly. Make sure you use California Tan’s after-tan extenders and moisturizers to keep that long lasting tan.

Since soaking and scrubbing are usually performed during manicures or pedicures, these should be completed before your sunless spray tan has begun. All oils and moisturizers from these services should be removed to ensure proper spray tan application and development.
